Loaded up more pictures!

My brother (the one roaring) and I kayaking down a lake near Camden, Maine.

So I loaded up some more pictures from my Mom's digital video recorder. Since it is not made for taking photos, the quality of the pictures is not as great as the other pictures I took, but you can get the idea.

Here is a scenic picture of the lake:

And more pictures from the Great Head trail:

Left: Myself, my mom, and my Dad on the Great Head Trail. Right: My Dad and me at the edge of the cliff. Although the water might look close there, it is actually about a good 50 foot drop into the water there (!).

Enjoy!

P.S. (8 hours and counting 'till my 21st birthday! Yeah! Still haven't figured out what I am doing, but I'll keep you posted...although the storm might make it a bit hard to leave the house).

Better to have a headache now...

I have not posted for a while because I have been lately focusing on the nitty gritty stuff for my trip to Peru; things like money, plane tickets, passports, and housing…all the little things, of course. It is funny. I truly thought I had it all figured out a few months ago. I had a cheap hotel, I had plane tickets, I (thought I) had my passport, and I had an exact itinerary. Unfortunately, that was all for Bolivia. Now, I have to figure all that out from scratch once again. To be quite honest, it is all a bit frustrating, though I trust that it will all work out in the end. When I complained to my parents recently, my Dad exclaimed “better to have a headache now than a migraine in South America.” He is right; but I am getting really antsy and I just sort of want to fast forward through everything right now until I get there (except for a little pause on my 21st birthday (coming up soon!) haha).

I think this will truly be an incredible experience, in ways I cannot even imagine. For starters, I am really excited about the medicinal focus of my whole thesis. I think that I am expecting this thesis project to not only help me write something great, but to figure out what exactly I want to do once I get into medicine.

I have been considering a lot about studying Public Health before going to medical school so I can not only have a practice in the United States but also work and help out Latin America’s health problems. Having grown up, in part, in Venezuela, I feel tied to that continent and “el pueblo latino.” There is something about “el calor familiar” (the familiar heat) about the people there; every time I go to a party filled with Venezuelans I feel it. People are so nice, welcoming, and warm... Yet, there is so much chaos and suffering at same time. I like to think that it would be grand if I could eventually help alleviate the pain on the medical side. Who knows? We can all have our dreams. Virchow, a famous doctor and historical figure, once said “The physicians are the natural attorneys of the poor, and the social problems should largely be solved by them.” I kind of like that. I guess that is what attracts me to public health. I’ll keep that in the backburner for now.

Interesting anecdote: Virchow is most famous for expressing the fundamental law of epidemiology, which is “If disease is an expression of the individual life under unfavorable conditions, then epidemics must be indicative of mass disturbances of mass life.” Sounds kind of obvious now, but I think it helps us keep a proper perspective on humankind to realize this was a relatively recent realization. It's funny how what is “obvious” is never constant in human history.

Hey! So I finally posted the pictures of my trip on Flickr. You may access it by visiting the following website (if it works...I have not tried this before): http://www.flickr.com/photos/forsadospirito/sets/443541/ .

Road Trip with Family

Hey!
So I know I technically made this blog only to discuss my trip to Peru and Brazil but I figure since I made it so early I might as well also use it to talk about random stuff in the meantime. I am right now in Hartford, CT after spending the last week and a half with my family road-tripping it up New England. I went through New York, Hartford, and Maine. Maine was awesome! I got to hike through Acadia national park (which is beautiful) and walk by some HUGE rocky cliffs that precipitously meet with an awesomely rough and choppy sea. I also went kayaking for 10 miles down a local lake (whose name I cannot remember, since it was long, but it is around Camden). It was intense but soo much fun!
So now I am ready to go home and start planning my trip to Peru this summer. I am sooo lucky that I changed the trip from Bolivia to Peru, because now there is a travel warning since a revolution ended up happening. The president, Carlos Mesa, of Bolivia resigned and the next two men who were in line did not dare take their posts, so the third man in line, the head of the supreme court, is now the new president of Bolivia. Crazy!!! I feel really bad for Bolivia; its future looks very unstable right now, and it already is the poorest country in South America.
Well, I will post the pictures from my New England trip later. Stay tuned!

Blog of Trip to Peru and Brazil

Hey Everyone!
I made this blog because I will be traveling to Latin America this summer in order to do thesis research on the history of indigenous/traditional medicine and its political power. I have been preparing for this trip for almost a year now and I am extremely excited that, very soon, I will be finally embarking on this small odyssey of mine. I suspect many little adventures will come up which I will surely write on this blog. Plus, this is a good way for me to get in contact with everyone I know back home and where I can post all my pictures.

The trip will take place from July 1-August 21th. First I will be traveling to Lima, Peru where I will stay for a month. Then I will travel around all of Peru for two weeks. Finally, I will go visit Brazil for one week before finally returning to my humid home in Miami :-)

Those of you who know me may be surprised that I am going to Lima and that I did not mention Bolivia. Originally, my plan had been to go visit Bolivia and do my thesis research there. Unfortunately, the situation in Bolivia has become extremely volatile. La Paz, the city I was planning to stay in, is almost completely blockaded from the rest of the world causing mass-panic, vandalisms, and shortage in food and gasoline! After a lot of worrying, a lot of deliberation and discussion with parents and professors, I have decided that the best option was for me to change my plans and go to Lima, where I have a lot of friends and support. I will keep you posted on what I am doing about this sudden change. I am confident that things will fall into place as long as I work hard. If anyone has any suggestions of things I should do while in Peru, please reply to this blog or e-mail me.
